In the fall of 2003, members from The Woodlands Community Association ( WCA ), the Community Associations of The Woodlands ( CATW ) and a member of The Woodlands Association ( TWA ), took a trip to Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
The delegation was sent on this international trip to represent The Woodlands in the Nations in the Bloom contest that took place from October 2, 2003 to October 6, 2003. This competition has since been renamed to The International Awards for Liveable Communities. This competition is endorsed by the United Nations Environmental Program.
The Woodlands entourage which departed on September 30, 2003 and returned on October 7, 2003 came in second place in their population category.
This trip cost the homeowners of The Woodlands $14,016.07. The attendees were as follows:
Joel Deretchin – Current TWA President, CATW board member and Developer employee
Bruce Tough – Current Woodlands Fire Department & CATW Board President, WCA board member
John Powers – Current Assistant General Manager Community Services
Kelly Deitrich
Sherman Yehl – Former General Manager
It is unclear if the $5,041.62 spent on “Presentation Materials” actually accounts for any labor for the preparation of the presentation.
The cost of the entry application for the 2006 contest is £315 or about $575 at current exchange rates.
