Two Juveniles Suspected of Starting Church Fire

Church Building Damaged by Fire Started with Fireworks

New Caney, Tx July 18, 2008:

Firefighters from several Montgomery County Fire Departments responded to assist the New Caney Fire Department in extinguishing an early morning fire on Thursday morning just after 1:30 AM. A building belonging to the Peach Creek Baptist Church received significant fire, heat and smoke damage, however Firefighters were able to contain the fire before it destroyed the building.

Investigators from the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms conducted an investigation into the cause of the fire. Patrol Officers from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department assisted the Investigation Team in locating and identifying two juvenile suspects, after reports that they had been seen discharging fireworks earlier in the area and damaging property.

One juvenile admitted going into the Church and using fireworks to start fires in the building. Another juvenile was taken into custody on unrelated charges. The investigation continues into this fire, and Investigators anticipate filing charges against at least two juveniles in connection with the fire that damaged the church building. Under State Law, arson involving a church facility is a 1st Degree Felony.

No other suspect information will be released on the juvenile suspects.
