Montgomery County, Texas
During the month of July, 2008, numerous Burglary of Motor Vehicles (BMV’s) occurred in the West area of Montgomery County, primarily in gated subdivisions along Highway 105 West, FM 1097, and Honea Egypt Road. One of the subdivisions was targeted in the early morning hours of July 21, 2008. That crime spree resulted in nine (9) reported BMV cases. In one of the cases, a wallet containing credit cards was stolen and some of those credit cards were used to make purchases.
Through a follow up investigation initiated by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Property Crimes Unit, leads were developed which resulted in the identification of a suspect in many of these cases and the recovery of a significant amount of property. It was determined the suspect was recently taken into MCSO custody on unrelated charges, and is still in custody. MCSO anticipates filing an additional charge on the suspect for Burglary of a Habitation.
The suspect in these crimes has cooperated with detectives and has assisted in identifying the subdivisions and residences in which he committed BMV’s. The suspect stated he would only target gated subdivisions and would look for unlocked vehicles. The suspect explained that he focused on “gated communities” because he believed the residents felt more secure, and tended to leave their vehicles unlocked. The suspect would steal anything from coins, jewelry, laptops and IPod’s, and in one case he claimed he stole some illegal narcotics that he found in a car. This information is being followed up on as well.
The suspect explained he committed these crimes to support a daily $400.00 to $500.00 “Meth” drug habit. To date, over $10,000.00 in property has been recovered by the Property Crimes Unit and the suspect has been linked to fourteen BMV’s and one Burglary of Habitation. However, it is believed he was involved in well over fifty BMV’s during July and early August, 2008; some of which were never reported to authorities. Additional charges will be presented to the DA’s Office.
This investigation is on going by the MCSO Property Crimes Unit.
