On Tuesday, September 23, 2008, approximately 7:00 pm, Conroe Police officers responded to a reported fatality accident in the 100 block of N. FM 3083 West.
Conroe Police patrol officers were in the process of clearing a previous accident at this location.
Conroe Police marked patrol vehicles were partially blocking the eastbound lane of traffic to protect the persons involved in the accident as well as the wrecker and driver that were also on the scene. The wrecker driver identified as Stanley Schultz, 05-31-53, apparently crossed the roadway into the westbound lane of traffic to retrieve debris from the previous accident when he was struck by a 2000 Chrysler van traveling eastbound on FM 3083. The driver of the van was identified as Rebecca Dunn, 06-27-51. The van was also occupied by a 10 year old male passenger. Neither Dunn nor the 10 year old were injured.
The initial investigation conducted by traffic investigators from the Conroe Police Community Oriented Response Team (CORT) revealed the van apparently passed to the left of the marked patrol units and Dunn did not see Schultz in time to take evasive action to keep from striking Schultz. Schultz was also apparently not wearing a reflective safety vest as required by a recently enacted state regulation regarding wreckers and wrecker drivers. Alcohol did not appear to be a contributing factor, however, speed and other factors are still being investigated.
Schultz was transported by ambulance to Conroe Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. Montgomery County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2, Trey Spikes ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Dunn was released at the scene pending the outcome of the investigation.
