MCFMO Press Release – Fire Warning

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/productview.php?pil=HGXRFWHGX

These conditions make it difficult or impossible to control outdoor burning, and can increase the risk of dangerous wildfires.

Yesterday, numerous wildfires occurred in Montgomery County and throughout Central and SE Texas. The largest fire reported yesterday was several hundred acres in Bastrop, with several houses destroyed, and the largest fire in our area was approximately 90 -100 acres North of the Montgomery County Park near Willis. One mobile home was destroyed by fire yesterday in the Cut N Shoot area of Montgomery County. The resident there burned a brush-pile in the morning and had left it unattended when the weather conditions caused the fire to spread to his nearby mobile home. No serious injuries were reported during yesterday’s fires in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County Firefighters and Texas Forest Service personnel will be spending today monitoring remaining hot-spots from yesterday’s fires and preparing equipment to respond to additional fires. Many State resources, including aerial firefighting equipment will be committed to the fires in Central Texas and not available in the event of another major fire in our area.

Today, we are again reminding residents that no burning should be attempted today during the current weather conditions. In addition to civil liability, persons who burn under these conditions can be cited if their fire gets out of control and damages property. In Montgomery County, it is illegal to burn household garbage or rubbish on less than 5 acres or in a subdivision.
