Robbery (Arrest)

On July 29, 2009, Deputy Dax Byer was inside the Woodlands Mall at 1201 Lake Woodlands, working off-duty security when he saw a black male running out of the Dillard’s Department Store into the mall area being chased by a group of people. Deputy Byer learned that the suspect had just stolen a purse from a 69 year old female victim and was attempting to flee.

The deputy gave chase through the mall and saw the suspect drop the purse and run into J.C. Penney’s. Losing site of the suspect inside the department store the deputy alerted both mall security and other deputies in the area. While searching the store Deputy Byer saw the suspect exit a bathroom and run outside to a waiting car.

Deputy Byer attempted to stop the suspect and car but the car fled as he approached. The deputy alerted mobile patrol units that had converged into the area. Deputies Cano and Viands located the car as it was attempted to leave the mall area near the Sears Automotive Store and two suspects were arrested.

Deputies learned that the victim had been sitting on a bench outside the south side of Dillard’s Department Store when she saw the two suspects walk past her. One of the suspects grabbed her purse and started to run. The victim tried to hang onto the purse but was not strong enough. The victim gave chase after the suspect until other citizens joined to help. The victim sustained only minor injures from the struggle.
