SHENANDOAH, TEXAS (October 6, 2009) The City of Shenandoah has hired Gregory Smith to fill the recently vacated City Administrator position, a decision finalized in a special city council meeting on October 5, 2009.
Mr. Smith comes to Shenandoah from the City of Angleton, where he served as City Manager, overseeing all aspects of the organization. While in Angleton, he managed an annual budget of $26 million and directed a $6 million citywide capital improvement program. He also managed over 150 employees.
His credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science from Stephen F. Austin State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from LeTourneau University. He is a member of the Texas City Managers Association (TCMA), the Texas Municipal League (TML) and a past member of the East Texas City Managers Association. Smith is active in the community, with memberships at multiple civic organizations including the Rotary Club, the United Way, and two Chambers of Commerce.
With over 11 years in city management from three Texas cities, Mr. Smith brings diverse experience to Shenandoah, along with fresh eyes to a city in transition.
Mayor Garry Watts welcomed Mr. Smith to the city and is helping him get familiar with the facilities and the overall organization. “Shenandoah is a small city with big city benefits and also some big city issues. Greg will help us get the most out of our growth and our resources while also navigating the rough waters that sometimes come along with development,” said Mayor Watts.
Over the last twelve years, Shenandoah has changed dramatically from a quiet bedroom community to a unique city that combines a strong commercial base with a growing medical corridor, sports facilities, and new residential areas – all within two square miles.
The city council looks to Mr. Smith to continue guiding the city’s development and to provide strong internal leadership. Smith will officially assume his new role at the City of Shenandoah on November 2, 2009.
