MCFMO Press Release – Fatal Fire – Lake Conroe

Montgomery County, Tx February 1st, 2010:

firelogo_1Firefighters from the Lake Conroe and Montgomery Fire Departments were dispatched to a house fire on West Creek Drive off Blake Road just before 12:30 AM this morning. Two Engines, a Ladder and a Tanker from LCFD arrived within minutes, but the mobile home was already fully involved in fire when it was reported to 911. They were joined 5 minutes later by an additional LCFD Engine and a Tanker from the Montgomery Fire Department

Initial callers reported to 911 that the home across the street from their’s was heavily involved in fire, and that the neighbor’s car was in the driveway. Firefighters found one person deceased in the home after they brought the fire under control and immediately called in Investigators from the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office. The victim is believed to be the home’s 55 yr old male resident, but has not yet been identified. An autopsy will be performed to help determine the cause of death, and it is likely that DNA testing will be needed to confirm the victim’s identity.

An initial examination of the home revealed that the occupant apparently used several space heaters in the home. MCFMO Investigators identified the remains of 8 portable space heaters throughout the home, but it cannot be confirmed at this point if any of them played a role in this fire. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent homes but the mobile home was a total loss. Investigators have not yet determined if the home had working smoke detectors.

Working smoke detectors in the home can drastically improve your chances of surviving a fire, especially when they occur late at night when residents are normally asleep.

Studies have shown that having working smoke detectors in your home cuts you and your family’s chances of dying in a residential fire in half.

For more information contact your local Fire Station, or the MCFMO. Additional information on smoke detectors is available on the MCFMO and NFPA websites.
