Log Cabin dated to the late 1800’s or early 1900’s
Possibly one of the oldest homes in the county
A fire raced through a log home off of Old Houston Road Monday evening, destroying the approximately 120 year old home. Family members who live on the property state that the log structure has been in their family for at least 54 years. The home was well over 50 years old when they acquired the log home in the early 1960’s. The log home has been vacant in recent years but still contained family heirlooms. Family members also state that the home was most likely built from logs harvested from local Montgomery County pine forests, possibly from their own land. The family had recently contacted Texas A and M University, seeking help in restoring the old log home. The family dates the log home to between 110 years and 120 years old.
Caney Creek Fire Department (formerly Grangerland and Bennett Estates FD’s) responded to the fire around 7:04 pm and arrived to find the front portion of the home on fire. Although the fire was brought under control in around 30 minutes, the home is a total loss.
No injuries were reported in this fire. Investigators from the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office have determined that the fire was accidental in nature and that an electrical outlet and an extension cord on the front porch was the cause of the fire.
