Pct. 4 Constable Press Release – Drug Arrest – New Caney

July 15, 2010

EAST MONTGOMERY COUNTY – An overnight traffic stop that began with an expired inspection sticker and obscured rear license plate ended in with the arrest of a passenger on two felony drug charges and one misdemeanor.

Pct. 4 Deputy J. Bergland was patrolling Newton Drive in New Caney around 1 a.m. Thursday morning when he stopped the vehicle regarding the two visible violations. As he approached, he noticed the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt.

The passenger, 26-year-old Nicole Ileen Murphy of New Caney, exhibited signs of methamphetamine use, and the deputy recognized her as a repeat offender. Deputy Bergland received their consent to search the vehicle and found no contraband, but had reason to believe Murphy was concealing an illegal substance on her person.  Deputy Bergland took Murphy into custody for the seatbelt violation and transported her to the Montgomery County Jail. During the subsequent interview process, Murphy admitted to Bergland that she was concealing methamphetamine in her vaginal cavity, and voluntarily removed it.

Murphy is charged with first-degree felony manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance; introduction of a controlled substance in a correctional facility (third-degree felony) and no seat belt – passenger (Class C misdemeanor).

Her bond was set at a total of $53,000 and she remained jailed as of Thursday afternoon.

Constable Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden said he was proud of Deputy Bergland’s tenacity in removing more illegal drugs from East Montgomery County.

“When I took office, I made a promise both to the law abiding citizens of Pct. 4, and to the criminals of Pct. 4, that my agency would do everything possible to combat the drug problem here and to take criminals off of our streets and put them behind bars,” Constable Hayden said. “We’re keeping our promise, and anyone who plans to use or sell illegal drugs in Pct. 4 should also expect to go to jail.”
