Conroe PD Press Release – Officer Involved Shooting (Updated)

4-3-11, 12:30 p.m.

UPDATE – The suspect in this incident is James Richard Hill. He is a W/M, DOB 08/12/1956. Records indicate that he is a resident of Liberty County.

On Saturday, 04/02/11, at approximately 4:00 pm, Conroe Police officers were dispatched to a report of a disturbance at 450 N. Loop 336 East. Initial reports indicated that a man was armed with a shotgun at the Flowers Bakery, and was threatening employees there.

The first officer to arrive on scene advised dispatch that the suspect was in possession of a shotgun, and that he was pointing it at the officer. At this time, it appears that the suspect fired once at the responding officer, striking the officer in the face. Several other officers were on scene as this was occurring, and the other officers returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect died at the scene.

The wounded officer, Sergeant James Kelemen, is a six year veteran of the Conroe Police Department. He was transported to Hermann Hospital by air ambulance. At last word, the officer was in stable condition, however it is reported that he will lose his right eye due to the injury.

The suspect’s name is not being released at this time. The incident is being investigated by Conroe PD, and by the Montgomery County District attorney’s Office.
