MCFMO Press Release – Barn Fire Kills Horses

Montgomery County, Tx August 9th, 2011

Just after 6 AM this morning, Montgomery County 911 began receiving reports of a large barn on fire at FM 1488 and Superior Rd. Arriving units from the Magnolia Fire Department reported a barn estimated at 5000 sq ft, heavily involved in fire. Firefighters struck a 2nd alarm, bringing in units from the Woodlands and Needham Fire Departments to assist. MCHD EMS and a Rehab Unit were dispatched to the scene to monitor the health of Firefighters and support their operations.

At the time of the fire, 28 Arabian Horses were in the barn. Passersby and neighbors were able to open outer stalls and release some horses, while other neighbors and firefighters actually entered the burning building, opening additional interior stalls under heavy fire and smoke conditions. At this time 14 horses have been accounted for and 14 are missing. Of those accounted for, some are suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. A veterinarian is on scene at this time treating them, and they are expected to survive.

MCFMO Investigators are on scene working alongside Firefighters working to confirm how many horses perished in the fire. Precinct 2 Commissioner Craig Doyal has dispatched heavy equipment to assist the crews on scene.

The barn is believed to be a total loss, and along with the obvious emotional loss for the owners of these horses, many are valuable show horses as well with an estimated average value of $60,000 with one reported World Champion valued at $100,000.

More details will be released as they become available.
