Pct. 4 Constable Press Release – New Tactical Unit Rounds Up Suspects

October 6, 2011

EAST MONTGOMERY COUNTY– Pct. 4 Constable Kenneth “Rowdy” Hayden launched a new crime fighting initiative in September that proved very successful. A tactical team of four officers, rotating monthly, will focus on a specific high crime area, which will be determined by a variety of criteria including complaints, calls for service or tips and can be related to any criminal activity from thefts to drugs.

Constable Hayden said the first month showed the proactive concept was a step in the right direction.  The team made 32 arrests. Twenty were felony arrests and 12 were misdemeanors. They seized $85,800 in cash from narcotics dealers, as well as eight vehicles. The team also seized three guns and those will be destroyed. Narcotics recovered included Xanax, Hydrocodone and Soma, with a total of 777 pills that have a street value of approximately $3,500. Hydroponic marijuana taken off the streets by September’s TAC Team weighed a total of 7.5 pounds.

“The first month was an experiment and we were very pleased with the outcome,” Constable Hayden said. “However, we were not surprised because we know with the dedication our officers have shown, if they put their minds to something they can make it happen.”

The teams will consist more of plain clothes officers than uniformed officers and sometime K-9 Units as well. As for how long the initiative will continue, Constable Hayden said that will depend on how long it continues to be an effective tool.

“We’ll continue to look at the numbers and if they continue to be successful, well keep going,” he said. “I see this as a proactive approach to law enforcement that will curtail illegal activity in areas where things have begun to get out of control.”

Something else the Pct. 4 Constable’s Office has recently implemented is a tip line, which the constable believes will also assist them in identifying which areas and activities need to be the focus of the TAC Team.

“We now have a way for citizens to call in tips anonymously and provide information that might be helpful in solving crimes or bringing fugitives to justice,” Constable Hayden said. “There’s no reward like Crime Stoppers, but I’m confident there are a lot of people out there who just want to do the right thing and maybe they haven’t already done so because they were afraid of retaliation.”

“Now they can call 281-577-TIPS from wherever they feel safe.”
