We recently changed video players on our homepage.
Unlike the previous player, the new player does not have an obvious summary section for the videos.
To access the scene summary for each video one must click on the book icon on the bottom of the player. Clicking on the book icon will bring up a short summary describing the content of the video.
For videos which are posted that do not have a related news story, clicking on the book icon to access the video summary information will be the only way to access information about that particular video.
For videos which do have an associated news story, we will simply post a link to the full story in the summary information section.

We were recently contacted by two site visitors who are having issues with viewing videos on the new video player.
With the help of these individuals we believe we have isolated the issue that was causing their particular problem.
It does not seem to be an issue with the player itself. Apparently it first occurred when we enabled i-phone compatibility inside the new player.
Anyone who recently started having issues viewing videos on the new video player, please contact us.
We, as of yet have no idea what percentage of video player viewers are having this issue. For those that are having issues, contacting us will provide important feedback as well as give us some data on the percentage of users affected.
The fix could be as simple as a software upgrade on the client (user) side.
Another option would be to disable i-phone compatibility for the video player.
Information we gather from viewers will help us decide the best course of action.
Thanks

Hiya Dmen73
Could you please provide the browser and version of the browser you are using to access the site?
Also, the grey box that shows up, does it have a animated circle in the middle of it?

I am using IE 8.0 and the grey box does not have an animated circle. I have updated quicktime to the latest and greatest, but still no video.

The video player is flash based, so go here http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ to make sure your flash player is working correctly.
I also found this thread that may be helpful.

Unfortunately I do not currently use ie 8, am still using 7. Therefore I do not have a way to try to recreate your particular problem.
You might try searching google for IE 8 and flash to see if you can find any other ways to trouble shoot flash or any particular bugs/problems with IE 8.

You might also try a different browser. If another browser works then you know its related to ie 8 and its settings.
If you have the same issues with say firefox, then you may need to look at other issues….network, security settings, etc.
Let us know the outcomes as I am sure others may be having issues that have not posted.
Thanks

I have a similar problem when I use IE. Using Firefox solves the problem . . .
You say the video is Flash-based, but IE is using Quicktime to try to load. It could be that QT is the default player for our browser???? I'm not sure.
When I go to this site using IE (I'm using 7 at the office), I get the following message: Additional software is required for QT to playback this media. It may be available from the QT components page.
I hit cancel, and the video box has a blue Q with a question mark in it.
As I said, the problem does not occur when I use Firefox.

Hi Sam
Thanks for your post.
I have had a couple of people report your exact problem. However after several hours of trying to duplicate it,(removing qt, updating qt, etc.) I was unable to recreate the problem.
You said this problem occurs on a machine at your office.
Do you have a home machine running IE to check to see if you have the same issue?

Yes, it happens at home with IE as well.
I have a personal laptop that I take back and forth….have the same problem at home as well as the office….and have the same problem on 2 of the desktops at the office. It's odd because it's only certain machines. I have a mini netbook that it works just fine on.
I just use Firefox. It's better anyway.
