Hello Mr. Foz, great website and forum that I just found and joined recently. I see you do quite a bit of posting and I was wondering if you could help me with a new trunking radio scanner. I purchased it from Scanner master and it is supposed to be pre-programmed and it is, however I am not al that familiar with this new trunking technology. Any suggestions would be very helpful, look forward to hearing back from you when you have the time. The radio is a Uniden Bearcat 898T.
Thanks, David.

Hi David
Welcome to the site.
First I would go to the Uniden site http://www.uniden.com and see if you can download their programming software. When I recently purchased a new scanner I was able to download and obtain a software key for free from uniden. The same may be true for your scanner.
Uniden scanners typically have preprogrammed systems from across the entire nation. Typically, I will erase the preprogrammed info (unless scannermaster did a custom program for you)and start from scratch. The programming software will help you both delete the items you do not want as well as program systems you want to monitor.
The model you purchased is not a digital model. Therefore, in the Montgomery County area you will not be able to monitor the new digital system that the county recently switched to. That may not be a big issue with you because even with a digital scanner the reception of the new digital system is very poor.
Your scanner will be able to monitor Conroe PD and all fire and ems in the county.
You may need a serial to usb adapter if you are using the computer connection cable that came with your scanner.
The main system in the county to monitor with your radio will be the Montgomery County EDACS system (see talkgroup info here).
Once you have the scanning software and have your scanner connected to your computer, let me know and we can go from there.

Hi Foz and thanks for the reply. Yes they custom programmed it and I have the software and the cable and have all of that working through my PC. I am little confused, the scanner is a digital trunking radio, isn't that what Montgomery county just switched to?
They way they programmed it is what I don't understand, what's the differece between having the scanner in trunk mode or not, seems like at times the activity can be lively or dead depending on how that switch is configured. I am able to hear Conroe PD, all the local fire departments. They also have some of what appears to be Harris county EMS and medical flight frequencies in there as well.
I'd like to wipe it all out and start from scratch like you said you do, but am nervous jumping into it that deep.

Hi David
If they custom programed it then I would leave it alone until you become more familiar with how a trunking scanner works.
As far as trunking radio systems (trs) go there are analog trs's and digital trs's
The county just went to a digital trs. Since your scanner is not digital, you will not be able to listen to the digital county system which includes all of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office radio traffic.
For an example of the county digital radio traffic you can listen to our live feed of that system by Clicking on Law Enforcement Feed 1 on our live scanner page
Also go to http://www.radioreference.com for a source of general and specific information on your radio. Read everything you can on trunking and radios etc and play with the software as much as possible. You will eventually begin to understand how it all works.
Also you could save the original radio configuration and then erase all the programming and start from scratch. If you have the original configuration saved, you could always reload it if you gets things all screwed up :-).
Sometimes the radio traffic will be intense and hard to keep up with due to the volume of the traffic. At other times you may wonder if your radio is working due to the lack of traffic.
Also make sure you read your manual. It may help you determine exactly what the trunking switch does. Basically it will switch you between a conventional type system and a trunking system. I believe the more recently developed radios take care of that switchability issue in the software and don't actually have a trunking switch that is pushable.
If Harris county and Montgomery county traffic is programmed in different groups, you should be able to selectively disable the Harris county group and still listen to the Montgomery county systems.
Read.. Read….. Read…
Hope that helps some

Read read read…you are right about that and I have been doing a lot of that. I am a little bummed out that my scanner will not receive the MCSO as I thought I purchased a digital trunking scanner and that it would be compatible, but like you said earlier if the signal from that system is poor no big loss.
Well I'll play with it more and see what kind of damage I can do, thanks again for all of your help. I know about the live scanner feeds on the Montgomery County monitor home page, that is what kind of got me "hooked" in the first place.

Hey Foz, How are things? I am having trouble with the scanner. I know abou tthe new digital system! Did you have to reprogram any old EDACS frequencies? I am having trouble with channel 868.350. All that channel produces is a shrilling noise. I have heard that every trunking system has a core chennel and you need to block it out, but I have not had this problem in the past. the biggest problem is most of the traffic gets caught on this channel so it comes thorugh as just a shrilling noise.
Let me know if anything has changed.
thanks

After messing with it for a bit,I figured it out. I guess it just needed a quick reprogram. Now it works much better.

Heya Pete
Recheck the freqs in the radioreference database for the edacs system.
I noticed the other day it looks like they dropped out Freq (LCN) 5 and 6
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=58
I have not made those changes in my edacs system yet but will when I get the chance…..that may or may not have anything to do with your problem

Thanks, I did notice they had dropped 5 and 6. I reloaded the freq's without eliminating 5 and 6 and it seems to work much better now. I think I had an extra freq in there somehow.
Thanks for the help!!!
